Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee

Common Name:  Alfalfa Leafcutting Bee, Lucerne Leaf-cutter Bee

Latin Name:  Megachile rotundata (Fabricius, 1787)
                        (L. Best, det.)

Length:  7 - 9 mm

Range: Throughout Alberta

Habitat:  Near agricultural release sites.

Time of year seen: June - August 

Diet: Pollen and Nectar

Other:  It is an introduced solitary species that is used for commercial pollination of alfalfa, vegetable crops and some fruit crops.
