Common Name:  Great Grey Copper, Great Copper

Latin Name:  Lycaena dione (Scudder, 1879)
                        (N. Kondla, det.)

Wingspan:  30 - 40 mm

Range:   Southern Alberta

Habitat:  Prairie, parkland and foothills

Time of year seen:  June to September

Preferred Flowers: Thistle and yellow composites

Caterpillars Diet: Dock and Sorrel

Other: The Great Grey Copper is Alberta's largest copper.  Its range extends from Illinois west to Colorado and north to central Alberta.  It is typically found near ponds, sloughs, rivers and streams where its host plants, dock and sorrel, grow.  (Bird et al, 1995)
