Linden Looper - male

Common Name:  Linden Looper Moth, Winter Moth

Latin Name:  Erannis tiliaria (Harris, 1841)
                        (B. Patterson, det.)

Wingspan:  32 - 42 mm

Range: Alberta

Habitat: Aspen parkland and mixed wood boreal forest

Time of year seen: September - October (Additional Sightings)

Caterpillar's Diet: Willow, paper birch, trembling aspen,
                                    maple, apple and choke cherry

Other: The Linden Looper is found across Canada and as far north as Ft. McMurray west to Peace River in Alberta.  It can be locally common, but rarely causes any significant economic damage.  Male moths are light tan brown with wavy darker brown markings. The males are attracted to light at night. Females are wingless and have black markings on a white background.  In Alberta the adults emerge in mid-September to early October.  After mating the females lay eggs which over winter, with the larva hatching in the spring.  (Philip & Mengersen, 1989, Covell, 1984))
