Common name:  Mormon Fritillary

Latin Name:  Speyeria mormonia (Boisduval, 1869)
                        (N. Kondla, det.)

Wingspan:   40 - 50 mm

Range:  Southern 3/4 of Alberta

Habitat: Prairie, mixed forest and alpine meadows

Preferred Flowers/Food: Thistle, Bergamot and Legumes

Time of year seen:  June to September

Caterpillar's Diet: Violets

Other:  This species is found from Manitoba west to British Columbia.  In Alberta it is found in the mountains, foothills and south to the U.S. border.  The exact host for its caterpillars is not know.  It is thought to be violets, however other plants such as vetches, saxifrages, Mountain Avens and Moss Campion are also possibilities.  There is only one brood of Mormon Fritillaries per year.  (Bird et al, 1995)
