Spring Azure

Common Name:  Spring Azure

Latin Name:  Celastrina ladon lucia Cramer, 1780
                        (R. Bercha, det.)

Length:   25 - 30 mm

Range: Throughout Alberta

Habitat:  Sheltered areas with dogwood or buffalo berry

Time of year seen: April - June (Additional Sightings)

Caterpillars Diet: Dogwood, tea bush, bunchberry, huckleberry, skunkbush, poison ivy, blueberry, cranberry, and cherry

Other:  The Spring Azure is found across Alberta and is one of the first butterflies to come out in the spring.  It is a weak flier, typically found near Red Osier Dogwood bushes. (Bird et al, 1995)
