Common Name:  Dingy Cutworm, Bent-line Dart

Latin Name:  Feltia jaculifera Guenee, 1852
                        (R. Bercha, det., confirmed by G. Anweiler)

Wingspan:  30 to 40 mm

Range: Alberta

Habitat:  Native grasslands, meadows and riparian edges

Time of year seen: Mid July to September

Caterpillar's Diet: Alfalfa, clover, flax, tobacco, raspberry, oats and wheat

Other:  Feltia jaculifera is probably a complex of six different and indistinguishable species. It is a common and abundant moth found throughout Alberta.  There is one brood per year, with 3rd and 4th instar larva over wintering. Older larva are generalist feeders eating a variety of plants including: alfalfa, clover, flax, tobacco, raspberry, oats and wheat.  Adults are generally nocturnal and come to light.  In dry grassland regions they maybe found on flowers nectaring later on in the day.  (Covell, 1984 & Powell et al, 2009)
