Virgin Tiger Moth

Common Name:  Virgin Tiger Moth

Latin Name:  Grammia Virgo (Linnaeus, 1758)
                        (R. Bercha, det.)

Wingspan:  64 mm

Range: Alberta

Habitat: Cultivated land and clearings surrounded by forest

Time of year seen: End of May to early August

Caterpillar's Diet: Buffalo bean and plantain

Other:  The Virgin Tiger Moth is a wide spread species which occurs from Newfoundland to Alberta.  The hind wing of the moth comes in two color morphs: the more common bright pink and the rarer lemon yellow.
