Great Northern Digger Wasp

Common Name:  Great Northern Digger Wasp, Great Golden Sand Digger

Latin Name:  Sphex ichneumoneus (Linnaeus, 1758)
                        (R. Bercha, det.)

Length:  up to 38 mm

Range: Throughout Alberta

Habitat:  Fields and meadows, nests in sandy area.

Time of year seen: June  to October (Additional Sightings)

Diet: Nectar

Other:  Native to Alberta, these solitary wasps capture crickets or Katydids and use them to provision their nests.  The adult wasps have golden hairs on the head and thorax with the 1st two segments of their abdomen colored orange.
