Common name:  Variegated Fritillary

Latin Name:  Euptoieta claudia Cramer, 1775
                        (N. Kondla, det.)

Wingspan:  45 - 60 mm

Range:  Southern half of Alberta

Habitat:  Prairie grasslands, meadows and road allowances

Preferred Flowers/Food: Composites

Time of year seen:  June to October

Caterpillar's Diet: Violets, stonecrop and Purslane

Other:  The Variegated Fritillary does not over winter and as such adult butterflies are either migrants from the warmer south or emerged from local broods.  (Bird et al, 1995)
